Super Power For the Empire! Mechanical Pimp
After the initial shock, the news of the emperor's death were handled with a great dismay. As a civilian, having been killed by the Federals did put a further stain on their cause, especially when footage allegedly originating from the palace, sources unknown, showed what seemed a Federal trooper killing the Emperor in cold blood.
As the Imperial government had indicated that it wanted a cease fire, the offensive operations on Aresia had ceased. On the other hand, the troops left there were not going to give in to the enemy and defended the positions around the former palace area, where the Federal troops had concentrated in.
All in all, the Imperium's darkest hour had come and anyone who tried to continue their normal life on the planet could feel it, even though it wasn't necessary visible.
The Federal troops who made isolated insurrections to the East were however pushed back by surprisingly stiff resistance from surprisingly large numbers of veteran legions of Agamemnon still stationed there, indicating that the Imperium still had fight left in it.

The delegation was headed by who appeared as the leading figure of the Curia, Lucius Murcius Paulinus, followed by a handful of senators.
''I am Curator Lucius Murcius Paulinus and on behalf of the Imperium Galactica I concede our defeat and call for a cease fire. I have come to hear and your terms for a lasting peace between our two nations.'' he said curtly.

''Liberate is an interesting word considering how the Imperial populace feels about you and your communist minions.'' said Paulinus.
''Aresia is out of the question. You haven't conquered the planet nor you will unless you are willing to see this conflict to our unconditional surrender, which wont happen unless you conquer every piece of space rock that the Imperium considers its own.''
''However, recognizing our defeat, we have concluded that we'll be able to concede the territories you have conquered, plus the westernmost Imperium, covering the territory curently falling under administration of the Western command, stationed in Ria.''
''The exchange of prisoners shall be concluded as requested. We will also pay for the damages as you request, but the value of goods will follow the current index of the value of Imperial denarii. Given that the Federation doesn't recognize the currency market, I expect that these damages will have to be paid in raw materials and or goods. Correct me if I'm wrong.''
''As for the dismantling of legions...'' Paulinus started.
''I'd rather have you not ask this of us. It would save both of us lives, blood and money. Why? The Rian command is held by a man you've yet to face in battle, Warmaster Lanius. I'm sure you have a dossier somewhere so look him up. The western legions are loyal to him. They identify their interests with his interests. And dismantling the legions is definitely not in his interests, even though we'd order it to be done.''
''The murder of the emperor was most unfortunate, for both of us. If it really was you, which I doubt, then you've made a terrible misjudgement.''
''As for Umbra, it will be done.''

''You can cease spelling out self-evident matters now. We will keep our people in line, if not, they will be killed. Lanius certainly shares the opinion of the people of his homeworld, who are will be soon facing a controversial liberation by communist forces, I take it. Yet Lanius is a soldier of the Imperium and he is going to follow orders. We will keep our part of the treaty, you can count on it.'' said the Curator.
Paulinus was nervous, but he didn't let it show. The treaty he was about to sign was certainly not a basis for a lasting peace between the Imperium and the Federation. It was a truce. Truce for a few years, maybe a decade, a century at most. What was certain that the Imperium had faced the biggest military catastrophe in its history. Although the amount of men the Federals had wasted to get this far was much larger than the Imperial losses, so was their manpower now, when the Imperium had lost the traditional militaristic worlds of the west along with their forts and naval bases.
Lanius was definitely going to fight, Paulinus concluded. The Federals would grind his forces into dust until the Warmaster would be forced to leave his home system behind. Then, should he try to reach the Imperium, the Curia would simply eliminate him and whoever follows him.
''Very well, we are ready to sign the treaty on behalf of the Imperium.''
